Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How can we help you?

Dr. Ochoco believes that informed patients make decisions that support better oral health. These frequently asked questions reflect the concerns he hears most often: about treatment options, what to expect, and how he approaches clinical decisions. If you don't find what you're looking for here, call Schuster and Ochoco Dental at (310) 453-5300. A conversation is always the best place to start.

Cleanings and Exams

Dental problems rarely announce themselves early. By the time a tooth hurts, or a gum issue becomes visible, the underlying condition has often been developing for some time. Knowing what to watch for between visits can help you seek care before a manageable problem becomes a complex one.

Signs a Cavity May Be Progressing

  • Sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet that lingers after the source is removed
  • A dull ache or intermittent pain in a specific tooth
  • Discoloration, dark spots, or a rough edge you can feel with your tongue
  • A filling or crown that feels loose, high, or different than it used to
  • Pain when biting down on a particular tooth

Signs Gum Health May Be At Risk

  • Bleeding gums when you brush or floss
  • Gums that look red, swollen, or have pulled away from the tooth
  • Chronic bad breath that doesn't resolve with brushing
  • A tooth that feels loose or feels different when you bite down

What These Signs Could Mean

None of these symptoms mean the situation is beyond repair. They do mean that waiting to see if it resolves typically won’t work in your favor. The sooner Dr. Ochoco evaluates what's happening, the more options you have.

If you notice any of these signs between visits, call (310) 453-5300. Schuster and Ochoco Dental serves patients from Brentwood, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and the surrounding Westside communities.

Composite Bonding

Both bonding and veneers improve the appearance of teeth, but they suit different concerns and different patients. Here's how Dr. Aaron Ochoco thinks through the decision.

Bonding vs. Porcelain Veneers

Composite bonding is usually the right choice when:

  • The concern involves one or two teeth rather than a full smile correction
  • The change you're looking for is modest; a chip repaired, a gap closed, an edge evened out
  • Preserving tooth structure is a priority, and you prefer a reversible option
  • You want to address a specific concern without committing to a more involved procedure
  • Previous bonding needs refreshing or replacement

We recommend porcelain veneers when:

  • Multiple teeth need correction in shape, color, or proportion
  • The desired improvement is more significant than bonding can reliably achieve
  • Discoloration is internal or hasn't responded to whitening
  • Bonding has been tried previously, and the results haven't held long-term
  • You want a more durable solution with greater control over the final aesthetic

A Few Differences to Consider

Bonding typically completes in one appointment and requires little to no tooth preparation. Veneers involve at least two appointments, lab fabrication, and some removal of enamel, which makes the process irreversible. Bonding costs less and is easier to replace. Veneers offer more precision and tend to last longer.

Composite Fillings

The right restoration for you depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains and how well it can support the repair. Here's how Dr. Ochoco thinks through the decision:

When a Dental Filling Is Appropriate

  • Decay is caught early, and the surrounding tooth structure remains largely intact
  • The affected area is small enough that composite resin can restore it reliably
  • An existing filling needs replacement, but the tooth itself remains strong

When a Crown Is the Right Choice

  • Damage or decay has compromised the tooth's overall structure
  • The tooth has cracked in a way that leaves it vulnerable to further fracture
  • An existing restoration has grown large enough that replacing it would weaken what remains
  • The tooth needs protection as well as restoration

In some cases, Dr. Ochoco may monitor a tooth over several visits to our Santa Monica dental practice before recommending treatment. If the situation is stable and a watch-and-wait approach is reasonable, that's what he'll suggest. His goal is to recommend the most conservative treatment the clinical evidence supports, not the most involved one.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Choosing the right cosmetic treatment depends on several factors: The specific concerns you want to address, the condition of your existing teeth, how much change you're looking for, and how conservative you'd like the approach to be.

Common Cosmetic Smile Concerns

Dr. Aaron Ochoco uses personalized smile design to address numerous aesthetic issues:

  • Chips, cracks, or minor gaps — Composite bonding is often the first option to consider. It requires little to no removal of tooth structure and can significantly improve aesthetic smile issues in a single visit.
  • Staining or discoloration — Professional whitening addresses many types of staining, but not all. If the discoloration is internal or doesn't respond to whitening, Dr. Ochoco may recommend bonding or veneers instead.
  • Shape, proportion, or multiple concerns — Veneers offer more control over the final result and work well when several teeth need correction.
  • Old or outdated restorations — Existing veneers or bonding that look unnatural, have worn down, or no longer match your surrounding teeth can typically be replaced with updated materials and a revised design.

Dr. Ochoco evaluates each case individually. During your consultation, he reviews your concerns, examines your teeth, and explains which options make the most sense given your goals and tooth structure.

Crowns and Bridges

The right restoration depends on how much healthy tooth structure remains, whether the tooth is still present, and what will serve your long-term oral health best. Here's how Dr. Aaron Ochoco thinks through the decision:

A Tooth Filling Is Appropriate When:

  • Decay is limited, and enough healthy tooth structure remains
  • The tooth hasn't cracked or fractured beyond what a filling can reliably address
  • An existing filling can be replaced without compromising the tooth further

A Crown Is the Better Option When:

  • Sufficient tooth structure does not remain for a filling to hold
  • The tooth has cracked, leaving it vulnerable to further fracture
  • Replacing an existing large filling would weaken the tooth
  • The tooth needs protection and restoration

A Bridge Makes Sense When:

  • A tooth is missing, and the adjacent teeth are already crowned or need crowns
  • You want a fixed restoration that doesn't require surgery
  • Bone levels or overall health make implant placement more complicated

An Implant Is Worth Considering When:

  • Adjacent teeth are healthy, and you want to preserve their structure
  • You want a long-term, standalone solution
  • Your bone levels and overall health support the procedure

In some cases, the right answer isn't immediately obvious. Dr. Ochoco may want to monitor a tooth before recommending a more involved restoration. This conservative approach protects you from treatment you may not need.

Let's Talk About Your Options

To discuss your options, call (310) 453-5300. Schuster and Ochoco Dental serves patients from Brentwood, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and the surrounding Westside communities

Emergency Dental Care

A knocked-out or broken tooth is one of the few dental situations where the minutes before you reach the office genuinely affect the outcome.

Completely Knocked-Out Tooth

  • Call our office immediately. The sooner we evaluate the tooth, the better the chances of saving it
  • Hold the tooth by the crown only. Do not touch the root.
  • Rinse the tooth with water. Don’t scrub.
  • Try gently reinserting the tooth in the socket, but don’t force it. Bite down gently on a clean cloth to hold it in place.
  • If you can’t reinsert it, place the tooth in a small container of milk or between your cheek and gum to keep it moist.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water
  • Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth if there's any bleeding
  • Save any pieces of the tooth
  • Avoid chewing on that side until we see you

For Pain or Swelling in Either Situation

  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek in 10-minute intervals
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed, following package instructions
  • Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum or tooth

Call (310) 453-5300 as soon as possible. Schuster and Ochoco Dental serves patients from Brentwood, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, and the surrounding Westside communities. After hours, voicemail instructions will connect you with a team member as quickly as possible.

Full Smile Makeovers

Individual cosmetic treatments address specific concerns. A veneer corrects the shape or color of a single tooth, bonding repairs a chip, and whitening addresses overall discoloration. Each works well when the concern is contained, and the surrounding teeth don't need attention.

A smile makeover is different in scope and in process.

When a Smile Makeover Makes Sense

  • Multiple teeth need correction, and treating them individually could produce inconsistent results.
  • Existing restorations need to be replaced, and the surrounding teeth need to match.
  • Your concerns involve both appearance and function, such as bite changes alongside cosmetic issues.
  • You want a cohesive result rather than isolated improvements

How It's Different from Individual Treatments

  • Treatment is planned as a whole before any individual procedure begins
  • The sequence is deliberate, with each phase building toward a defined final result
  • Mockups and patient approval happen before permanent work begins
  • Dr. Ochoco coordinates every element of treatment himself, within a single practice, with continuity across every appointment

What a Smile Makeover Isn’t

A smile makeover at Schuster and Ochoco Dental is not a fixed package with a predetermined list of procedures. It's a carefully thought-out process that results in a customized treatment plan. Some patients need extensive work. Others need less than they expected. The consultation determines which.

To find out whether a smile makeover or individual treatments make more sense for your goals, call (310) 453-5300 to schedule a consultation with Dr. Ochoco.

General Dentistry

With a conversation. No intake form captures everything, and no x-ray that tells Dr. Ochoco what matters most to you. The first appointment is about understanding where you are, what's changed, and what you'd like to address.

No Judgment, Just Solutions

Patients who've been away for a while sometimes arrive expecting a long list of problems and a lecture about why they waited. They won't find either here. Dr. Ochoco's focus is on building a clear picture of your current oral health and identifying the most conservative path forward, not on cataloging everything that should have been done sooner.

What the first appointment typically involves:

  • A comprehensive exam covering every tooth, your gums, your bite, and any existing restorations
  • Digital x-rays to evaluate what isn't visible to the naked eye
  • An honest conversation about what Dr. Ochoco finds, what needs attention now, and what we can monitor over time
  • A preventive plan tailored to your current oral health status

What it doesn't involve:

  • Pressure to address everything at once
  • Treatment recommendations before you're ready to discuss them
  • Judgment about how long it's been

It Starts with a Phone Call

Starting is the hardest part. Once Dr. Ochoco has a clear picture of your oral health, he can help you prioritize and move forward at a pace you’re comfortable with.

Porcelain Veneers

The right cosmetic treatment depends on your concern, the condition of your teeth, and how much change you desire. Here's how Dr. Ochoco thinks through your options:

Composite bonding may be right if:

  • The concern involves a chip, a small crack, or a minor gap
  • The affected area is limited to one or two teeth
  • You prefer a reversible option that preserves more tooth structure
  • The change you're looking for is modest

Whitening may be appropriate when:

  • Your primary concern is surface staining or general discoloration
  • The shape and proportion of your teeth are not a concern
  • The discoloration responds to professional bleaching agents

Veneers are typically recommended when:

  • Multiple teeth need correction in shape, color, or proportion
  • Discoloration is internal or doesn't respond to whitening
  • You want a more significant and long-lasting improvement

Crowns become the recommendation when:

  • A tooth has sustained structural damage beyond what a veneer can address
  • There is significant decay or an existing large restoration involved
  • The tooth needs protection in addition to cosmetic improvement

In some cases, the right answer involves more than one treatment. A smile makeover might combine whitening, bonding, and veneers, each addressing a different concern. Dr. Ochoco explains the reasoning behind every recommendation so you understand not just what he suggests, but why.

Preventive Dentistry

Cavity risk depends on a combination of factors, some within your control and some that require professional management. Here's what Dr. Ochoco typically discusses with patients who want to reduce their cavity risk:

Oral Health Home Care Habits

  • Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, paying attention to the gumline and back teeth where plaque accumulates most.
  • Floss once daily to remove buildup from between teeth that brushing can't reach.
  • Rinse with water after acidic or sugary food and drink rather than brushing immediately, which can spread acid across tooth surfaces.
  • Stay hydrated. Saliva is one of your mouth's primary defenses against decay, and dry mouth significantly increases cavity risk.

Diet and Oral Health

  • Limit frequent snacking, which keeps acid levels elevated throughout the day.
  • Reduce sugary and acidic drinks, including fruit juice and sparkling water, which soften enamel over time.
  • Choose water over sports drinks, which combine sugar and acidity in ways that accelerate enamel wear.

Preventive Steps Dr. Ochoco May Recommend

  • Fluoride treatments for patients with elevated decay risk
  • More frequent monitoring of teeth showing early signs of demineralization
  • Specific home care products tailored to your risk profile
  • A custom nightguard if grinding or clenching contributes to enamel wear
